Generation Z employees are being reprimanded for poor performance and not meeting employer expectations. A survey by Resume Template found that 1 in 10 Gen Zers were placed on performance-improvement plans (PIPs) in the past year. Gen Z employees tend to work fewer hours and engage more in non-work-related activities compared to older generations.

Key survey findings include:

  • 10% of Gen Zers work fewer than four hours per day, compared to 4% of millennials, 5% of Gen Xers, and 3% of baby boomers.
21% of both Gen Zers and millennials work five to six hours per day.
  • Majority of respondents work seven to eight hours per day.
  • Gen Zers are more likely to engage in activities like communicating with friends and family, browsing the internet, and taking extended breaks during work hours. Millennials use social media the most at work, while Gen Xers and baby boomers are less likely to engage in non-work-related activities.

Performance improvement requests and PIPs are highest among Gen Z:

  • 30% of Gen Z employees were asked to improve, and 11% were placed on PIPs.
  • Millennials: 23% asked to improve, 12% placed on PIPs.
  • Gen Xers: 14% asked to improve, 3% placed on PIPs.
  • Baby boomers: 7% asked to improve, 1% placed on PIPs.

Andrew Stoner from ResumeTemplates suggests companies set clear productivity metrics, use meaningful assignments, and leverage technology to demonstrate efficiency to address these dynamics.

Despite challenges, the hiring market for new college graduates remains strong, but competition from artificial intelligence presents new challenges for entry-level roles.
